A leading figure in communication design and contemporary visual culture, Ian Anderson will be responsible for the Creative Direction of the upcoming Lisbon Biennale’s communication. Founder of the famed TDR (The Designers Republic) in 1986, his name has become a byword for controversy, razor-sharp criticism and pioneering creativity. Following a period of intense activity in the Sheffield music and arts scene, Mr. Anderson focused on design as an intellectual and ideological endeavor. A self-taught, self-motivated practitioner and experimenter, he devised TDR’s trademark triple-A: Attitude, Approach and Application.
With 3 participations in previous editions (EXD‘01, ‘03 and ’08) and identifying strongly with Experimenta’s mission and core values, Ian Anderson will contribute his insight and drive to the Biennale’s re-energized communication strategy within an increasingly stronger international positioning.
Ian Anderson was in Lisbon recently to kick off the design for the visual identity of EXD Lisboa 09 as well as the re-branding of Experimenta.

The blog “It’s About Time” is already online. A forum for discussion, reflection and idea-sharing, it aims to involve a wider audience in the programme and content of EXD’09. The curators of core exhibitions - Tulga Beyerle, Hans Maier-Aichen and Emily King –; guest designers and critics - Max Bruinsma, Ian Anderson, Frederico Duarte, Mário Moura and Luís Royal – are the first to contribute to the on-going debate through regular posts in different formats: photo-log, travel journal entries, suggested reading, exhibition reviews and theoretical explorations. EXD’s first blog seeks to bring the audience closer to this edition’s programme by making its production process more visible and accessible.

ExperimentaDesign Lisboa 2009 is among the 23 applicants selected by the European Commission’s Executive Agency for Education, Audiovisual and Culture. From among 163 submitted proposals from all over Europe, this Biennale edition was acknowledged as a project that “promotes innovation and creativity, as well as mobility of creators and their work at a European level”, and also as bringing “added value” in “strengthening the European identity”.
