Experimenta welcomes winner of European Union – Japan Design Competition 2006

At the invitation of the organizers, Experimenta has joined the EU-Japan Design Competition 2006, an initiative of the Delegation of the European Commission to Japan in cooperation with the embassies of the EU Member States in the country. Open to young designers and design students residing in Japan, the theme of the competition is “Improving life at Home”. Any projects for objects or products for use in the home qualify for entry, with the exception of proposals in the areas of system design, graphic design, textile design and architecture.
The competition stems for Japan’s rising interest in European design, its work processes, trends and practitioners.

The winners will be awarded scholarships and internships in renowned European institutions, including Experimenta, which is offering a 6-month internship during the year 2007.
Given the excellent reception this initiative has had among participants and other parties involved, the organizers are already planning future editions of this competition.

SAMSUNG VISITS EXPERIMENTA
Experimenta integrates Samsung’s research project for Southern Europe

On July 16 Experimenta welcomed in its Lisbon headquarters the Head of Samsung’s Design Department together with a group of designers and researchers from this company, which is conducting a field trip and creative exploratory survey in the South of Europe, namely Lisbon, Barcelona and Valencia.

This team of designers and members of Samsung’s creative department came from South Korea and from the company’s Research Department in London for this 10-day visit to the South of Europe with the intention of understanding the characteristic features of Portuguese and Spanish design and contemporary culture, as well as its leading figures, in an effort to evaluate the impact of South Europe tradition and culture in today’s design.
The interest of this South Korean corporation stems from the growing influence of South European in the current design scene as well the potential role its key aspects may play in innovation and creation.

In Lisbon, the field trip’s programme was centred on Experimenta and also covered several design shops, the Design Museum and the new area on the eastern part of the city.

This research is being coordinated by the Spanish design studio Emiliana, owned by designers Ana Mir and Emili Padros. Still under discussion in a possible strengthening of ties between Samsung and Experimenta for the forthcoming edition of ExperimentaDesign – Bienal de Lisboa, which will take place in 2007.
